No matter the reason or the season, you can’t go wrong with a half-up, half-down hairstyle. They’re quick to style and flatter all hair types, lengths, textures, and face shapes. From the office to a girl’s night out, there’s a happy medium ’do for you. Of course, there’s more than one way to achieve this versatile style, so we put together a list of go-to looks to help you solve your indecision woes. Read on to discover our 10 favorite easy half-up, half-down hairstyles.

1. Half-Up Bun

2023 is the year of the ballerina bun, but you don’t have to use all your tresses to rock a bun. A half-up bun is an easy way to pull your hair off your face while retaining some length on the bottom — even if you’re sporting a bob. Simply follow our ballerina bun instructions but with half of the amount of hair. Add a little personality by placing a few decorative pins in your bun.

2. ’90s Blowout Vibes

The ’90s blowout is another hair trend that’s literally and figuratively making waves this year. Start by following our step-by-step guide on how to do the ’90s blowout. Next, pull the top half of your hair back and secure it with hair pins or an elastic tie. The key is maintaining the volume at the crown, so gently use your fingers when styling. Pull out a few strands of hair around your face to amp up those ’90s vibes.

3. Sleek Sides

If voluminous roots aren’t your thing, use a brush to keep your sides and crown smooth and sleek before securing your half-up, half-down ’do with hair pins. If your tresses are wavy or prone to frizziness, run a flat iron through them first. You can style your ends straight or add beach waves, depending on your preference.

4. Bohemian Fishtail

Looking for a new music festival look? Bring your sides up, twisting along the way. Loosely secure with a hair tie and create a fishtail braid underneath. Add a pop of color by braiding a ribbon in with your hair or gently placing flowers throughout for those boho festival vibes.

5. Pull-Through Ponytail

The classic topsy tail is one of the easiest half-up, half-down ’dos! Pull half your hair into a ponytail and split it down the center right above the hair tie. Pull the tie down slightly to create a hole through which you can flip the tail. Give the half pony a pull to make it a bit more secure. Add a few waves to the bottom half of your hair to give it some dimension.

6. Braided Half Updo

Start by backcombing the front of your hairline before using a flat iron to create subtle beach waves. Divide your hair into three sections and create a braid from your right temple across the back of your head. Repeat the same process on the other side. Secure both braids with hair pins. Gently tug at the braids to loosen them up and create some volume.

7. The Twist

Divide the top half of your hair into at least three to four smaller sections. Twist each section from root to tip. Overlap them to create an unstructured pattern of your choice. Secure with hair pins.

8. Messy Top Knot

Backcomb your hair at the crown of your head. Next, gently brush down your teased tresses to make them look neater without losing the volume while twisting them into a loose, messy top knot, secure with hair pins. Give the knot a gentle tug and pull out a few strands of hair around the sides of the face.

9. Double Braided Crown

Take two sections of hair on the left side of your head and make a regular three-strand braid with both. Secure with elastic hair ties. Repeat on the other side. Wrap all four braids around the back of your head to form a “crown” and secure with pins. Pancake the braids to make them look more voluminous.

10. Half-Up High Pony

Gently tease your roots to create volume and smooth out the hair. Pull half of your hair up into a high ponytail and secure it. Leave out a piece of hair to be wrapped around the elastic tie to conceal it and create a more refined style.
