Before You Begin

You can’t compose a hair care routine without asking yourself a few questions first. You may have to reassess your tresses occasionally due to changing seasons, age, styling, or lifestyle habits, and if you started any chemical processing treatments.

What Are Your Hair Goals?

Some examples of hair goals include:

  • More volume?
  • Less frizz?
  • Stronger strands?
  • Increased hydration?
  • Defined curls?
  • More shine?
  • Less breakage?
  • Color protection?
  • A combination of the above?

When you determine which hair goals are most important to you, then you’ll be able to hone in on a hair care routine that helps achieve those goals.

What’s Your Hair Type?

It’s vital to have a grasp of what your hair type is. A customized hair care routine helps you choose products suited to your needs and concerns. For example, if you have thin, pin-straight hair, you need products formulated for your specific hair type. The four common hair types are distilled into three subtypes.

Straight: Your tresses fall smooth from roots to tips — no wave in sight.

  • Type 1A: Little volume and is soft and silky to the touch
  • Type 1B: Slightly more volume and density
  • Type 1C: Coarse and thick but still straight

Wavy: The middle ground between the two extremes as there’s a slight curl pattern towards the tip.

  • 2A: Wavy yet thin
  • 2B: Wavy and somewhat thick
  • 2C: Thick, voluminous, and wavy

Curly: Your tresses have a curl pattern resembling an “S”.

  • Type 3A: Loose curls
  • Type 3B: Medium curls
  • Type 3C: Tight curls

Coily: Tighter than curly, coily tresses possess more of a “Z” pattern.

  • Type 4A:  Soft with a defined curl pattern
  • Type 4B:  Tight curls that follow more of the “Z” pattern
  • Type 4C: Tightly coiled

How Do You Like to Style Your Hair?

Do you like to use hot tools like a blow dryer or flat iron, or are you more of a wash-and-go person? The answer to this question will make a difference when choosing your hair styling products.

Creating a Hair Care Routine

Once you’ve determined your goals, potential concerns, hair type, and how long you want to spend coiffing your tresses, you can create an effective hair care routine with a little help from Better Natured®.

Shampoo, Condition, and Treat Wisely

The right shampoo will kick off your tailored hair care routine. At Better Natured®, each one of our shampoos is free from SLS/SLES (sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate). We replaced these ingredients with clean synthetic surfactants that do the job and still create that rich lather you love. Depending on your hair type and current state, choose between one of our three shampoo and conditioner formulas.

Wash Routine for Color Treated Hair

When used together, Better Natured®’s Color Care Shampoo and Conditioner help preserve your color-treated tresses for up to nine weeks* while promoting silky smooth strands less prone to breakage.**

Home hair treatments are a vital part of the conditioning process. Swap out your regular formula a few times a week with our award-winning deep conditioner for color treated hair. Along with protecting your Better Natured® at home hair color from fading too quickly, it provides deep hydration while reviving over-processed strands.

Wash Routine for Damaged Hair

If your hair is damaged? Give your tresses some much-needed TLC with our Damage Repair Shampoo and Conditioner. This dynamic duo is great for restoring hair that’s undergone stress from chemical treatments, over-styling, and hot tools.

Start by washing your compromised strands with our hydrating, replenishing, and strengthening shampoo. It helps reduce breakage by 40 percent* and works to prevent future damage. Next, apply a generous amount of Damage Repair Conditioner from mid-shaft to tips to provide much-needed moisture to distressed, dry tresses while delivering stronger* strands three times less prone to breakage.*

There may be a time, such as after a chemical treatment or when the temps take a dip, that you need an extra dose of moisture. In that case, replace your regular conditioner with a small amount of Damage Repair Strengthening Leave-In Cream. This power-packed treatment helps treat dry, brittle strands while smoothing, strengthening, and reducing frizz for an impressive 24 hours. It also safeguards your hair from future damage, making your tresses feel more resilient and three times stronger.**

Wash Routine for Moisturizing Hair

There are several reasons your strands become thirsty and an equal number of ways to moisturize dry hair. It all starts with using our moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Hair looks and feels soft, moisturized, repaired, and restored when used together.

Swap out your regular conditioner a few times weekly for our moisture hair masque. It only takes three to five minutes a week (minimum) to replenish and rehydrate dry, overprocessed, brittle tresses. Thanks to protective lipids that mimic those found naturally in healthy hair, detangling and combing are 14 times more manageable, which reduces breakage.

Protect From Heat Damage

Hot tools are great — and necessary, in some cases — but we recommend adding a heat protectant to your routine to keep your strands safe. Protect your tresses with a heat protectant such as Better Natured®'s Heat Styling Lotion, which protects hair during blow drying*, controls frizz for 96 hours, and preps tresses for a touchably soft finish that’s smooth, reshapable, and long-lasting.

Finish Your Look with the Right Styling Products

Styling products help accentuate a great cut and lustrous color. If your hair tends to tangle during the styling process, give your hair a spritz of Better Natured®’s Hydrating Leave-In Milk for an extra moisture boost. This multi-tasking styling aid hydrates, softens, detangles, smooths, and amps up shine while protecting against your hot tools.

For those in between wash days, keep your hair feeling fresh with our dry shampoo powder. It’s formulated to absorb oil between washes and boost the life of your style without leaving behind a chalky white residue. Shake before use and then pump onto dry roots or anywhere needing a revival. Gently massage or pat powder into the hair using your fingertips, or brush in to blend away any visible powder.
