Shoulder-length hair is neither long nor short, so while there are multiple ways to style your strands, it doesn’t hurt to get some expert advice or styling ideas. If you need a little inspiration to keep your ’do looking fresh and fabulous, we’ve got you. Whether you’re growing out your tresses or prefer maintaining your hair at a moderate length, there are plenty of ways to style shoulder-length strands that are anything but boring. Read on to discover our favorite ways to style shoulder-length hair.

Beach Waves

Even when summer is not in full swing, beachy waves are always in — no seascape required! There are multiple methods to do beach waves, and you don’t need to be a pro to execute any of them. A flat iron provides the most realistic-looking waves because the shape is looser. If you’re struggling with the wrap-and-slide method, divide your hair into four sections and braid each. Apply a heat protectant and run the flat iron over the braids a few times.

You can also use a curling iron to create beach waves by twisting the iron away from the face and leaving the ends straight. If you want to negate damage from styling tools or make waves while you sleep, go the heatless route with either braids, a headband, or a sea salt spray. Low Bun

There are several ways to rock a bun, but the low version is optimal for medium-length hair because it ensures all layers and lengths are secure. To jazz up your look, pull a small section of hair out of your ponytail and create a braid. Wrap it around the base of your ponytail and secure it with bobby pins before constructing your bun. Alternatively, braid your entire ponytail before wrapping it into the bun shape.

Half-Up, Half-Down

If you don’t want a full-blown updo but want to get your hair out of your face, check out our go-to guide featuring 10 easy half-up, half-down hairstyles. We’re not just talking about pulling your sides back, either. This versatile style presents itself as a bohemian fishtail, messy topknot, double braided crown, pull-through ponytail, ’90s blowout, and more. The possibilities are endless!

Milkmaid Braid

You don’t need to execute any fancy braids to pull off this fashion-forward style. Divide your hair into two sections and use the three-strand technique to create two braids. Pull the first braid up and over your head and secure it with bobby pins. Repeat with the other side.

Messy Updo

Updos don’t have to be complicated! Make a ponytail with the top third of your hair. Create a second and third pony directly underneath. Twist each one into a bun and secure with hair pins.

Braids to Bantu Knots

Here’s a playful, two-in-one style that has major vacation vibes. For look one, divide your hair into several ponytails and create a fishtail braid for each. Gently pull or “pancake” each braid to flatten them out and create more dimension. For bantu knots, follow the same steps, but then wrap each braid into a bun and secure with hair pins.

Messy Side Braid

Create a deep side part before making a loose braid. Secure the bottom with an elastic hair tie. The goal isn’t to keep every hair in place. Allow a few strands to fall out and frame your face.

’90s Updo

Claw clips are making a comeback in a significant way! Whether you love or hate this hair accessory, there’s no denying how easy it is to execute a quick updo. Simply brush your hair back into a ponytail that rests at the nape of the neck. Pull the pony up and secure it with your claw clip. Allow any short strands to fall naturally around your face.

Space Buns

Space buns are ideal for shoulder-length hair because they’re neither too large nor too small and are suitable for all hair textures. Part your hair down the center and create two buns on the sides towards the nape of your neck. Secure with hair ties or bobby pins. Fan out the buns to give them more of a carefree, playful look.
